Overview

Gallery 1957 is a contemporary art gallery in Accra, Ghana, established by Marwan Zakhem, a British construction company owner, in March 2016. The gallery is committed to showcasing West African and diaspora artists, featuring the works of prominent artists such as Gideon Appah, Serge Attukwei Clottey, Godfried Donkor, Modupeola Fadugba, Yaw Owusu, and Zohra Opoku. Named after the year Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule, the gallery opened its first two locations at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra on 6 March 2016, the Ghanaian Independence Day. The gallery's third location opened in London in October 2020 with an exhibition curated by Ekow Eshun featuring the works of Ghanaian artist Kwesi Botchway. The gallery's creative director is Nana Oforiatta Ayim, a Ghanaian writer and filmmaker, and the gallery also organizes the Yaa Asantewaa Art Prize, the first art prize dedicated to female African artists, to recognize the accomplishments of African female artists in the international art scene.
