Damongo is a town located in the Savannah Region of northern Ghana and serves as the capital of West Gonja Municipal. In February 2019, it was declared the capital of the newly created Savannah Region. Damongo is home to the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, the Yagbonwura, and is also the largest town in the Damongo Constituency, currently represented by Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor, who is also the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources. Apart from being a political and administrative center, Damongo is known for its key tourist attractions, including the Mole National Park, which is a great spot to see a variety of animals such as elephants. The village of Larabanga is also located nearby, and it is home to the oldest mosque in Ghana, the Larabanga Mosque, which is said to date back to 1421. Larabanga also has the Mystic Stone, and the village is renowned for its patterned vernacular architecture. Several prominent Ghanaians were either born or come from Damongo, including John Dramani Mahama, a former President of Ghana, Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, Benjamin Kunbuor, a former Minister of Defence, and Michael Abu Sakara Foster, a former presidential candidate of CPP.
