The Akyem are a prominent Akan ethnic group in Ghana, consisting of four states: Asante Akyem, Akyem Abuakwa, Akyem Kotoku, and Akyem Bosome, primarily located in the southern part of the Eastern Region. They make up approximately 3-4 percent of Ghana's population and hold a significant place in various spheres of Ghanaian life. Matrilineal in nature, the Akyem are known for their history as courageous warriors who established a thriving and influential state within present-day Ghana. When discussing the history of Ghana, the focus often turns to "The Big Six" - a group of six individuals who played a crucial role in Ghana's independence. Interestingly, the majority of the "Big Six" were individuals of Akyem descent.
